It is also with our products that we rely on premium materials, sustainability and recycling. Like no other natural material, leather stands for breathability, adaptability and longevity. Simply, the long life of our footwear, which can be worn for many years, is a sustainability feature. This ties in with the term “Slow Fashion”, which represents the slowing down of the fashion industry: what is called for is quality, not quantity, consumption has to be slowed down, clothes and footwear have to be worn for longer.
Leather from certified tanneries
We are a member of the Leather Working Group, an international non-profit organisation. Through our membership, we promote ethical, environmentally friendly, high-quality leather manufacturing all over the world. The majority of the leather used at Gabor comes from suppliers who have been certified according to the high standards of the LWG.
DriTan is a patented innovative technique for tanning leather. This involves the moisture in leather being used in a tanning process step instead of adding water. This saves large quantities of water, requires markedly fewer chemicals and produces much less waste water. DriTan Leather is no different from traditionally tanned leather in terms of quality, characteristics and durability.
Sustainable cork
Cork is not just a renewable material; it also contributes to biodiversity and climate protection. During production, the bark is peeled off specific oak trees (the trees are not felled). Cork is 100% biodegradable and can be recycled waste-free. We use cork material in many footwear models, e.g. as a material for socks or as covering for heels. Cork has cushioning, cold and heat insulating properties.
With the Pius Gabor brand we also use material from recycled bottle corks.
Partially recycled lining
Many of our shoes have a lining made using recycled materials. The lining consists of yarn made from up to 60% recycled disposable PET bottles. This reduces the amount of fossil fuel resources required for the production of the material.
Recycled sole
For our footwear with recycling soles, we make new soles from rubber residue. This means that production waste is recycled and resources are saved.
Exchangeable footbed made from recycled materials
Gabor shoes with exchangeable footbeds offer real benefits such as a cushioning effect; they are removable, can be exchanged for your own orthopaedic footbeds and are easy to clean. Another plus point in terms of sustainability: Many interchangeable footbeds are mainly made of recycled material.
We are already using techniques for processing residual leather. Reusing materials is an ongoing process for us, which we are constantly developing to save even more resources.
